As autumn settles in and the days grow shorter, November offers a fantastic opportunity for a family getaway with young children. If you're in the UK and wondering where to go, you're in luck! We've compiled a list of 10 fantastic destinations that are not only a short flight away but also perfect for families with little ones in tow. So, pack your bags, bundle up, and get ready for a memorable adventure.
Amsterdam, Netherlands: Known for its picturesque canals, Amsterdam is an ideal destination for families. In November, the city is less crowded, and you can explore its many attractions, such as the Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum, and the interactive NEMO Science Museum.
Don't forget to take a leisurely canal cruise to see the city from a unique perspective - it's a lovely way to spend a few hours seeing the city from the water. There are various boating operators (I can't remember who we chose!) but head down to the centre and you will find plenty.
Barcelona, Spain: Barcelona is a family-friendly city with a vibrant atmosphere. Take your little ones to the Barcelona Zoo, explore Park Guell, and let them enjoy the beach even in the off-season. November in Barcelona offers milder weather, making it a comfortable time to wander the streets and savour the local cuisine.
Take a leisurely walk down La Rambla, Barcelona's most famous street. Along the way, you'll find street performers, vendors, and plenty of places to grab some delicious Spanish snacks like churros and ice cream.
Edinburgh, Scotland: For those who want to stay within the UK, Edinburgh is a fantastic choice. November and December is when the city hosts its famous Christmas markets, and the festive spirit is wonderful.
Take your kids to Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Yacht Britannia, and enjoy family-friendly events during the holiday season.
Edinburgh is a family favourite of ours, we spent a long weekend there in October half term, several years ago, and had immense fun at the Edinburgh Dungeon and the theatrical Ghost Bus Tour around Edinburgh City with spooky graveyard visits.
For a truly delicious meal, I highly recommend lunch at The Mussel & Steak Bar on Grassmarket in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town. Follow this with a long amble through the cobbled streets taking in the beautiful old buildings, shops and sights that Edinburgh has to offer.
Prague, Czech Republic: If you're contemplating a family trip to the heart of the Czech Republic, you'll be delighted to know that Prague has plenty to offer for the whole family. From fairy-tale castles to interactive museums and charming parks, Prague is like a fairy tale come to life, and it's especially magical in November.
Take a leisurely stroll through the charming Old Town Square, visit Prague Castle, and make sure to take a ride on the historic tram. Grown ups and children, alike, will be captivated by the city's enchanting architecture and winding streets.
Prague is home to a Toy Museum, featuring an impressive collection of toys from different eras - from antique dolls and trains to modern action figures and even Barbie! Remember to indulge in delicious Czech pastries, like trdelník (a sweet pastry), and hearty meals in cozy restaurants that serve Czech cuisine.
Dublin, Ireland: Dublin is a welcoming and family-friendly city with plenty to offer. Visit the Dublin Zoo, explore Dublin Castle, and take a scenic walk in Phoenix Park. November in Dublin is crisp, and it's a great time to relax with a warm cup of hot chocolate or explore the city's history and culture. A fun way to see the city is by taking a horse-drawn carriage ride. Kids will love the novelty, and it's a relaxing way for the family to explore Dublin's historic sites.
Introduce your kids to Ireland's rich history and heritage at the National Museum of Ireland. The Archaeology branch houses fascinating artefacts, including the Ardagh Chalice and the Tara Brooch. They'll get a glimpse into the country's ancient past.
Lisbon, Portugal: Lisbon is a sunny destination even in November, making it an attractive option for families. A few ideas of places to visit include the Lisbon Oceanarium, explore the historic Belem Tower, and enjoy the city's delectable pastries. The pleasant weather and lack of crowds during this time of year make it perfect for young children.
No trip to Lisbon would be complete without a ride on the historic Tram 28, which winds its way through the city's narrow streets, giving you a fabulous view of Lisbon. Make sure to get a seat near a window for a delightful sightseeing adventure.
Reykjavik, Iceland: Whilst it may not be the first destination that springs to mind for a family holiday, Reykjavik has a unique charm that's perfect for adventurous, outdoorsy families.
I travelled with a friend to Iceland back in 2018 and will most definitely be returning with my children when the next opportunity arises.
Iceland is a unique and beautiful country near the Arctic Circle known for its stunning natural landscapes including glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls, geothermal hot springs and rugged coastlines and is host to a wealth of wildlife - think whales, puffins and Icelandic ponies!
Child-friendly, bucket list things to do with your family: explore the Golden Circle, embark on a thrilling hunt for the Northern Lights, visit the Lava Show (the ONLY live lava show in the World), discover stunning landscapes on horseback, go whale watching on a boat excursion and unwind at the Blue Lagoon with some serious relaxation before jetting home.
Need-to-know tips:
I strongly advise booking a private jeep with a tour guide to search for the Northern Lights; you stand a better chance of seeing them and avoid the over-commercialised coach trips where you may stand around in the cold for hours.
Book the Blue Lagoon for the return journey back to the airport as it's close by and will save you money doing the journey twice. I booked a return transfer which included admission to the Blue Lagoon on my visit.
Wrap up warm - take layers, gloves, hats, etc, more layers - that arctic wind can be pretty brutal if you're not dressed for the weather!
Dubai, UAE: Dubai offers a huge range of family-friendly activities and attractions and is a popular choice for sun-seekers looking to escape the UK's plummeting temperatures. If you get bored of the many beaches, take the kids to experience the theme parks and water parks, which are like nowhere else!
The Dubai Parks and Resorts complex includes three major theme parks - Legoland Dubai, Motiongate Dubai, and Bollywood Parks Dubai - offering a variety of rides and attractions for kids of all ages. For water fun, the Wild Wadi Water Park (located near the iconic Burj Al Arab) and Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark (the World's largest waterpark) will provide unrivalled fun for all ages.
In November, Dubai's Miracle Garden is in full bloom with colourful flower displays. It's a great place for kids to enjoy a leisurely walk and admire the floral creations. Located in Jumeirah, Dubai Zoo is a well-maintained zoo and safari that offers kids the chance to see a variety of over 3000 animals, plus the chance to get up close with pre-bookable encounters.
If you still have time on you hands, you may like to visit Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, located in The Dubai Mall (with a bit of shopping afterwards). The Dubai Aquarium is home to a diverse range of marine life. Children can walk through a glass tunnel surrounded by sharks and other sea creatures. In the same areas, you'll find Ski Dubai, an indoor ski resort with slopes for skiing and snowboarding. Kids can enjoy snowball fights, tobogganing, and interacting with penguins.
Vienna, Austria: A city with an air of elegance and sophistication. In November, the city is less crowded, so you and your family can explore its grand palaces, museums, and amusement parks easily.
Don't miss the Vienna Prater, a historic amusement park that's been entertaining families for centuries and is home to rollercoasters, spooky rides and fun galore. If visiting after 18th November, you'll be in time for the Winter Market at Riesenradplatz where you can spend the whole day soaking up Vienna's atmosphere with hot punch and live entertainment.
Coming from a horse-loving family, I am bound to be biased but you just have to stop at the famous Spanish Riding School and be enchanted by the beautiful Lipizzaner stallions performing their ballet-like dances for the crowds (no entry for children under three).
Spend a few hours at Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens, this historic palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site and features beautiful gardens, a zoo, and a Children's Museum, or take a sight-seeing boat trip on the Danube river to view the city from the water.
Croatia: This magical destination can be lovely to visit in November with children. While it may not be the peak tourist season, there are still plenty of things to see and do. Bear in mind that the weather can be a bit cool and rainy, so pack accordingly. Croatia is rich in history, and visiting historical sites can be educational and entertaining for children.
The capital Dubrovnik's old-world charm and stunning coastal views make it a great destination for families with its city walls and historic Old Town. Take a cable car ride to the top of Srd Hill for panoramic views of the city, or join a short, small group tour of the city specifically created for parents with children in tow. If you're keen on a bit of history, Diocletian's palace in Split, and the historic old town of Zagreb are also fascinating places to explore.
Croatia has a rich culinary tradition, so with that in mind, indulge in the local cuisine and try local dishes, such as seafood, pastries, and roasted meats. For the adventurous types, and depending on the weather and children's ages, you might be able to engage in adventure activities such as horse trekking, hiking or biking in the stunning Croatian countryside.
And finally, when travelling with young children, here are some more reminders to make your November break even more enjoyable:
Check the Weather: November weather can vary, so pack layers to accommodate the changing conditions. Be sure to include rain gear and comfortable walking shoes.
Child-Friendly Accommodation: Decide upon accommodation that caters to families, such as hotels with family rooms, or properties with kitchen facilities, with a good location - we can help with these aspects of your holiday planning.
Plan Activities Carefully: Research and plan your activities ahead of time to ensure they are age-appropriate and enjoyable for your children.
Keep It Flexible: Kids can be unpredictable, so maintain a flexible schedule and allow for downtime when needed.
Cultural Experiences: Introduce your children to local cultures, cuisines and customs of your destination to make the trip educational and memorable.
These 10 destinations offer fantastic opportunities for family adventures in November. From exploring historic cities to embracing the holiday spirit, there's something for everyone. So, pack your bags and set off on a memorable journey with your young ones. November is the perfect time to create lasting memories and experience the world together, and your wallet will feel happier travelling out of peek season too.
